Brighton turns out to support the NHS
Hundreds of NHS workers, unionists and residents marched across Brighton to support the NHS on Saturday 21 January. Organised by Sussex Defend the NHS and GMB, the march made its way from Royal Sussex County Hospital to Brighton Station.
The strong turnout demonstrated “how much people care about the NHS”, said John McDonnell, shadow Chancellor, who earlier had led the march through Brighton’s streets. It was “unacceptable” that in the sixth richest country in the world a child should be treated in a corridor of a hospital. “The NHS was founded by a Labour Government during an economic crisis after the war. By not turning people away from treatment, it was a very forward move in terms of civilisation and that is why people treasure the NHS. Today people are marching all over the country to ensure the NHS is not destroyed or privatised.”
